  • Facebook tabs for Pages shaved a little weight. Maximum width for any Page tab is now 520 pixels, down from 760 pixels.

  • Facebook’s largest advertisers increased their spending by 10 fold over the past year.
  • The Like button is now on over 350,000 websites. News, sports, publishing, and now shopping sites are the ones doing this.
  • US Facebook traffic back to normal in July.
    • Gained over 3M active users.
    • 18-25 age range dropped a point and was picked up by the 13-17 age range.
    • Although there is still more women on Facebook than men, men led growth across every age group.

Changes and Additions to Facebook:

Facebook will be changing the width (from 760 to 520 pixels) of their application tabs as well as anything to do with “Boxes” will be going away. All Facebook admins should be prepared with their new app tabs by August 23rd. More info on width change HERE.

New photo layout! You can now see up to 200 photos per page.

For friends that share the same link, Facebook provides threaded comments for each poster. In the photo, Manas, Vivek, and Jayesh have all posted the same link.

A Facebook location API could be coming soon, says Inside Facebook.

Facebook Testing: Ability to unsubscribe from getting notifications of comments after yours. Sometimes they can be pesky, but for brands, this means there may be less conversation.

Interesting Facts:

  • Almost 25% of tweets contain a link.
  • At least part of the reason Twitter is 140 characters is because the founders originally wanted to make a tweet fit in a text message.
  • Twitter released their Tweet Button! What’s that you say? It’s a button that sits on websites and makes it easy to tweet and see tweets sent of that particular page/article/whatever. Still not sure what a Tweet Button is? Here’s a video.

Blogs, the long-suffering workhorses of the Internet, are often thought of as an excellent way to communicate with others online.  However, a “blog post,” when used to convey one’s opinion, comes with one inherent flaw: it requires the use of words, and words alone can simply not be trusted.

Fortunately, in the entire history of the world, numbers have never been used to lie or deceive any one in any way.  That is why, periodically, we like to take a look at “Social Media by the Numbers” in order to cut through the empty rhetoric often present in the busy world of social media and get down to some serious and objective truth. 

  • Percentage of journalists in a recent study who say social media is an important tool for producing and reporting the stories they write:  56%
  • Number of unique visits to Twitter.com in January:  73.5 million
